James Kuhn, M.A., LMHCA
“One of the hardest things is watching someone go through life, living in a state of mental survival. One of my greatest joys is helping someone discover their strength and power and watching them move into a state of mental thriving, seeing them living their true selves.”

In James’ Words
I began my career as a caregiver for adults with developmental disabilities and co-occurring disorders. My passion for mental health ignited when I was introduced to Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and I found myself drawn to supporting clients navigating anxiety, depression, PTSD, and borderline personality disorder.
In 2018, I entered a graduate program to become a Doctor of Psychology. Since then, I’ve worked in community mental health, long-term inpatient psychiatric care, and short-term inpatient crisis stabilization. My clinical focus includes trauma, anxiety, depression, and behavioral change, with a special emphasis on serving the LGBTQIA+ and neurodivergent communities—groups I’m proud to be a part of myself.
My therapeutic approach is much like playing Dungeons & Dragons. I offer people the chance to explore who they are and who they want to become—whether that’s an idealized version of themselves or something they discover along the way. Together, we uncover the tools and strengths they’ve already been using and find new ways to wield them. And just like in character creation, I remind clients that it’s okay to try out different versions of themselves before settling into the one that feels right.
I work primarily with adults (18+) and draw from cognitive-behavioral, person-centered, and strength-based modalities. Clients often tell me they appreciate that I’m human—and that I’m not afraid to show it. I strive to create a space where people feel safe, not judged, and hopeful about what’s ahead.
Outside of therapy, I recharge by playing computer games, diving into D&D campaigns, and watching anime. These passions keep me grounded and remind me that healing doesn’t have to be heavy—it can be creative, playful, and full of possibility.
If you’re ready to begin your own campaign of healing and self-discovery, I’d be honored to be your guide.
